How to price your driving school services in 2026 — with Nepal market benchmarks

Pricing is the single biggest lever a driving school owner controls. Yet most centers in Nepal still use the same fee they printed on a flyer three years ago — without checking what the market is doing, what their costs are, or whether their best instructors should command a premium.

This piece is built from 50+ pricing conversations with school owners across Kathmandu, Pokhara, Butwal, Biratnagar and Birgunj over the past 18 months. The numbers are real ranges as of May 2026.

The base lesson — Nepal market ranges

License categoryKathmandu ValleyPokhara / ButwalSmaller cities
Category A (two-wheeler)Rs. 5,500 – 7,500Rs. 4,500 – 6,000Rs. 3,800 – 5,000
Category B (light vehicle)Rs. 12,000 – 18,000Rs. 10,000 – 14,000Rs. 8,500 – 12,000
Category B + A comboRs. 16,000 – 22,000Rs. 13,000 – 17,000Rs. 11,000 – 14,500
Commercial (truck/bus)Rs. 35,000 – 55,000Rs. 28,000 – 42,000Rs. 22,000 – 35,000

How to set your price (the three-question test)

  1. What are the two nearest competitors charging? Not the fancy chain across town — the two real alternatives a student would call.
  2. What is your cost per lesson? Instructor salary + fuel + vehicle depreciation + admin. Most schools we audit are 15–25% off this number.
  3. What is your reputation tier? If your pass rate is above 80% and you can prove it, charge 10–15% premium.

Three packaging strategies that work

The "complete course" bundle

Single price for all 12–20 lessons + theory + trial test. Easier to sell, easier to forecast revenue. Best for first-time license students.

The "weekend premium" tier

Add 20% for Saturday/Sunday slots. About 35% of students choose weekend; you make more from the same instructor.

The "refresher" upsell

Past students who lost confidence: 4-lesson refresher at Rs. 4,500. Almost pure margin since they are already enrolled in your records.

What not to do

  • Do not race to the bottom on price. The Rs. 6,000 schools in Kathmandu have 40% higher dropout and chase rates — math does not work.
  • Do not bundle commercial license into the same brochure as Category A. Different buyer, different journey.
  • Do not raise prices without raising visible quality (newer car, better office, named instructors).
